Cancer stands as a major leading cause of death worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report published on February 3, 2022, it contributed to nearly 10 million deaths, representing approximately 1 out of 6 deaths globally in 2020.

Furthermore, as the nature of cancers and the treatments that patients undergo, cancer patients are more susceptible to severe infections than the general population. According to research analyzing discharge data from non-federal hospitals in six states in the Untied State by Mark D. Williams in 2004, 8.5% of cancer patient deaths were related to sepsis. The analysis was based on information from hospitalized cancer patients throughout the year, excluding those patients hospitalized for pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium.

A study of the Taiwan Cancer Registry (2016-2020) in conjunction with mortality statistics revealed that from 2016 to 2020, there were 971 sepsis-related deaths (ICD-10: A41) among 226,563 cancer cases, accounting for approximately 0.43%.

In an effort to provide a safe and effective high-quality medical environment for cancer patients, Taiwan continues to implement the Regulations for Cancer Care Quality Assurance Measures through the Cancer Care Quality Certification, and also monitors infection-related indicators in cancer patients.
