To protect children and teenagers against e-cigarettes, flavored tobacco products, and heat-not-burn tobacco products. Legislator Man-Li Chen (陳曼麗), Kuen-Yuh Wu (吳焜裕), Yi-Ming Chen (陳宜民), the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and the Ministry of Education made a propaganda for rejecting tobacco products. They encouraged teachers and students to say “No” to tobacco products with 10 slogans, such as Super Wisdom, Super Will, Super Gene, Super Immunity, Super Attractive,
Super Vision, Super Hearing, Super Lung, Super Heart and Super Body.
Adult smoking prevalence had decreased from 15.3% in 2016 to 14.5% in 2017 ever since the implementation of Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act, and the adolescent smoking prevalence had declined as well. However, the e-cigarette use among 7th to 12th grade students had almost doubled from 2.0% (7th-9th grade) and 2.1% (10th-12th grade) in 2014 to 3.7% and 4.8% in 2016. Young group are more susceptible to the flavors and modern designs of e-cigarettes and heat-not-burn tobacco products. Traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes and heat-not-burn tobacco products all contain nicotine. Adolescents’ brain has not matured, and nicotine impairs cognitive ability and attention. The U.S. surveyed adolescents from 12 to 18 years old and found that over 70% of those who had smoked in the past month had tried to quit smoking in the past year. However, over 80% of them failed to quit smoking because nicotine is highly addictive. The survey also indicated that smoking adolescents are 4-5 times more likely to have used marijuana and cocaine when compared with non-smoking adolescents. It was revealed that tobacco products are inseparable from alcohol and drug abuse.
“Anti-Smoking Superman in the Class” Facebook campaign is a platform for creating the smoke-free campus. Harlem Yu was invited to be “Anti-Smoking Superman” to advertise the campaign. He enthusiastically encouraged teachers and students to participate in the campaign.
